KB Hotel, Surry Hills

26 FOVEAUX ST, SURRY HILLS

Reviewers: Bot & Blogs
Review time: Friday Lunchtime

KB, it's still a pub! Yeah! Take that pubs that aren't pubs! In your pub face!

Yes the KB is "still a pub" according to their signage, and we think that's great. However, it's a pub that we all spend more time walking past than actually stopping in and grabbing a beer. Why is this? Too much competition in the area? Yesteryear charm not cutting it any more?

"Exchange bow tie compliments with the staff"

In an effort to drink away the memories of a job he'd quit and finished up that day, Sydney Pub List member, Mr Miller, kicks off a mini Balmain pub crawl at the Exchange Hotel.

"Grab a spot up front, avoid Toilet Tunnel"

As the name suggests, the Wynyard Hotel is located in the Wynyard area of the CBD - ie, the area nearby Wynyard Station. This corner pub, on the Erskine and Clarence intersection, was founded in the later half of the 19th century and currently operates under the Merivale umbrella.

The Stage Door Canteen

The Combined Services RSL, or "Barracks" as it is also known, serves up drink and tucker for your gullet pleasure. No fancy pants la-dee-da bollocks here (apart from the digital sign-in process), much like this review.

Man Cave ticking all the boxes?

Buried under the Menzies Hotel alongside Wynyard Station, there is a forgotten cave of sorta-treasures. A man-cave. But does it tick all the boxes?

Strathfield Hotel, Strathfield

Reviewers present: Burger Bot, Joe Blogs, Brandon Lee, Danny Sammovich & Co.

Time of review: Post Stra Pocha dinner

"All trains lead to Strathfield"

Just a hop, skip and a stumble away from Strathfield Train Station is where you'll find Whelan's Strathfield Hotel, apparently a family business for over 90 years. The Hotel was built just after World War I, although you wont find much of the original interior, with the establishment taking on a fairly large overhaul roughly 5 years ago.

Orient Hotel, The Rocks

89 George Street, The Rocks, Sydney
Sydney Pub List reviewers: Bot & Blogs
Review time: Lunch

"It serves beer and other things"

The Orient Hotel is a pub and it is made of bricks. The other little pigs built their pub of straw and sticks and now those pubs are gone. One of the sizier-looking pubs of the area, standing on the corner of George and Argyle Streets, The Orient demands some attention from passers-by.

It was a brief visit to this Merival-owned venue on this occasion but it was enough to draw some conclusions and reflect on another time we had slipped in to the Slip Inn. Read on for more....

The Sussex Hotel, Sydney

20 Sussex Street, Sydney
Reviewers present: Burger Bot and Joe Blogs
Review time: After work drinks

The Sussex Hotel, Kent Street side. Blurry dashing-for-the-train filter.

"2 schooners and a pub with a Moreton Bay Fig"

Just like The Twelve Days of Christmas, the Sussex is a cumulative song where each verse is built on top of the previous one. There's drummers, pipers, leaping lords, ladies dancing, maids, swans, geese, a handful of gold rings, colly birds (seems like a lot of birds, yes?), three French hens (more birds!), the two schooners we're rating on this pub and a beer garden with a Moreton Bay Fig. Okay, this really has nothing to do with The Twelve Days of Christmas, except for those last two items, but I just wanted a tangent to open this review up with. Read on for our actual thoughts on The Sussex Hotel...

"You only live once?"

It's the second time we've been to this bar, sleazily tucked away in the corner of Wynyard station, and we left (after only one drink) again wondering why we came.
