The Stage Door Canteen

The Combined Services RSL, or "Barracks" as it is also known, serves up drink and tucker for your gullet pleasure. No fancy pants la-dee-da bollocks here (apart from the digital sign-in process), much like this review.

You'll find Barracks exactly there - on Barracks Street, between Clarence and York. In its ground floor front bar you'll find a light bustle of patrons huddled around high tables, either in conversation or having a gander at the tele. Hungry? Well, grab a pie from the Mrs Mac pie warmer behind the bar (yummy yummy misc "meats" in my tummy). This is right under the "raffle master". Also noted in the ground floor bar were pokies (cha-ching!) and many shields of military accomplishments.

On the taps we noted Carlton Black and Draught, VB, Crown Lager, Resches Draught, Coopers Pale Ale, Tooheys New, Pure Blonde, Cascade Light and Bulmers cider. A round of drinks came in at a low $8.80 for three drinks - 2 VBs and a Coke. Bargain! About what you would hope for from an RSL. On Mondays and Wednesdays you'll score yourself $3 schooners.

Basement bistro and bar

Downstairs in the Barrack Bistro is where they have chairs and seats, yes. We have pulled up a chair, seat and or cushy bench seat styled chair stool a handful of times and waited for our member number to be called out over the sound system from upstairs for the win of the weekly prizes. However, we never won as we aren't members, no. The food is fine, although we thought priced slightly high for an RSL. That said, it isn't rubbish food. I think it shows they take some pride in what they're trying to put out. We've sampled the schnitzel, burger, steak sanga and fish and chippy meals from Barracks. Not bad. ....brief burger report and price?...burger is actually a steak sandwich, price around $13. Refer to piccy.

Burger and chips

There's also a Barrack Restaurant but no comment on that one as we didn't sight it.
On the way out, we noted a sign, "Site of 'The Stage Door Canteen'. Meeting Place of World War II Servicement & Women and Stars of Radio & Theatre". Hope you liked that little story. We like stories. Yep.

One last comment, the carpet is truly amazing. Seriously, even if you don't feel like something to eat or drink, come and STAY FOR THE CARPET.
